Have you ever been in Armenia? What are your first impressions about the city of Jermuk?
Yes, I played in the Olympiad in Yerevan in 1996, but it is my first visit to Jermuk. I really like it, it is very peaceful and the local people are very kind and friendly.
Which of the previous Grand Prix tournaments was more successful for you and what was the reason of it?
I played only one Grand Prix till now – in Istanbul and unfortunately I was not successful there.
What expectations and objectives do you have from this tournament?
I will try to play some interesting games.
All Grand Prix tournaments have rather strong participants. What can you say about the participants of this tournament? Do you think there are favorites?
I think all the participants in the Grand Prix are very strong and I don’t have any clear favorites.
Which important traits do you appreciate in people? How do you want to see the world champion?
I believe to be a World Champion, you need to be not only a strong chess player but also have a strong personality.
The Grand Prix men’s tournament was devoted to the 80th anniversary of the world champion Tigran Petrosian and this tournament is devoted to the 100th anniversary of the famous chess composer Genrikh Kasparian. Are you familiar with his creations?
I have the deepest respect for Mr. Genrikh Kasparian and during my formative years as a chessplayer, I was deeply impressed by his compositions.
